Client: Bates Middle School, Hyattsville, MD 20781

Summary of Work Performed: To investigate, quantify extent, provide for corrective remediation envelope, remove, transport and dispose of lead-based paint and asbestos contaminated windows and doors from the gymnasium of the Bates Middle School. Personnel from BISHOP, under a non-emergency remedial action services contract with the Howard County School System, were called to investigate and remediate if necessary, the presence of lead-based paint and asbestos in the Bates Middle School. Upon investigation, it was found that over 700 windows or doors had various levels of contamination and were to be abated or removed for replacement. The action involved 15 full-time employees, working asymmetrical shifts (to accommodate various school functions as well as normal school operating hours), over a 4-month period. The action resulted in the removal and correct disposal to EPA-certified landfills, of 200 cubic yards of asbestos or lead contaminated materials. Engineering controls were designed and installed to minimize the disturbance to ongoing school activities. Temporary walls to isolate sections of rooms, covered exterior walkways to divert traffic flow from affected halls, and cold air baffle systems to divert exterior air penetration of the active school environment were among these controls. As the project was conducted after hours while the school was in session, clearance testing and wipe sampling of areas surrounding the work envelopes were conducted on a daily basis to ensure availability of all normal school areas on each day subsequent to work performed. Boom lifts were used to access work areas from outside the building with containment envelopes semi-permanently attached to the exterior of the building to control dust and contaminants. The project was performed under very tight time constraints and was successfully completed one week in advance of schedule.
