Information
Southwick Associates, Inc. specializes in fish, wildlife and natural resource economics. Southwick Associates was founded in 1990 to provide economic and business intelligence to Federal and state agencies, as well as industry. Our staff is comprised of economics and statistics professionals throughout the U.S. who have in-depth experience measuring the values, benefits and revenues possible from fish, wildlife, forests and water-related natural resources.
Southwick
Associates provides an array of socio-economic specialties. We
are experienced in communicating complex economic issues to the
public and specific user groups, in a manner that is simple, interesting
and informative. We can help clients better address many legal,
legislative and public communication issues through the practical
application of reliable and accurate economic information.
Specifically, we can:
-Develop economic models explaining
the level of jobs, tax revenues, and paychecks
created by people using fish, wildlife and other natural resources;
-Survey the public regarding the personal importance and values
they hold for wildlife,
or the negative values associated with overpopulated and problem
wildlife;
-Quantify the potential business or tax revenues that could be
generated by various plans utilizing fish, wildlife
and natural resources, and identifying the markets where new revenues
can be generated; and
-Build statistical models that explain the relationships between
people's actions and the impacts on fish,
wildlife and recreation.
-Examples include models produced for the U.S. Coast Guard that
explain which variables have the greatest
effects on boat accidents, and other models that project fishing
and hunting license sales and revenues.

SIN 899-1 Specialties
Economic Impacts, SIN 899-1
We can measure retail expenditures and quantify the economic contributions, such as jobs,
tax revenues, etc., to local, state and national economies generated by anglers, hunters, wildlife viewers, boaters, target shooters and other outdoor recreationists. We have also assessed the economic impact of public land acquisition, and government construction or military base activities. Our work is based on business and consumer surveys or existing databases reporting consumer expenditures, combined with economic models that simulate local, state, regional and national economies.
Natural Resource Damages and EPA 316(b) Values (SIN 899-1)
By using public surveys and established valuation procedures, we can calculate the monetary damages from fish and mussel kills, pollution incidents, poaching, and other acts resulting in the loss of fish and wildlife. We can also establish proper restitution for illegally killed fish and wildlife, as well as lost recreational and commercial opportunities. In addition, we can assist with EPA 316(b) analyses of fisheries resources both use and non-use values.
Fish and Wildlife Related Industries and Commerce (SIN 899-1)
We can measure the financial health and performance of industries dependent on fish and wildlife resources. We provide economic and business research that creates better understanding of markets and
competition, which allows for more effective and efficient planning and operational activities. In addition, we are experts at tracking trends within outdoor industries, as well as identifying major distribution channels and the overall structure of specific outdoor-related industries. We also examine trends, product flows and market shares for various outdoor-related industries, and the impacts on commerce created by existing or proposed taxes and regulations.
Miscellaneous Research (SIN 899-1)
Quantifying the value held by the public, recreational users, and non-users for natural resources. Analyzing the value of land transactions.
Quantifying the monetary returns possible from natural resources. Statistical projections, such as the likelihood of visitor frequency and annual revenues for outdoor-related businesses. Probability analyses, such as the potential for boating accidents. Plus, other topics including expert witness services, public festivals, and more.
Southwick Associates' thorough and timely service has resulted in noteworthy past performance ratings, and we enjoy an exceptional reputation in the fish and wildlife world. In addition to our myriad projects with state agencies and private industries, our Federal Government work includes:
Socioeconomic Impact of Proposed New Construction and Programs at Robins Air Force Base as part of a team conducting Environmental Impact studies for several proposed new facilities and programs at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, Southwick Associates analyzed and reported the current and potential economic impacts. This analysis covered the current economic status of the base and surrounding region, and based on regional economic models (input-output models), quantified the potential changes in jobs, income, tax revenues and retail sales that could occur with each proposed scenario.
Investigation and Monetary Values of Fish and Freshwater Mussel Kills was prepared for fishery biologists and others who must investigate fish and freshwater mussel kills and assign monetary damages after such events. This publication has been adopted as the legal basis for fines or restitution in more than half the states and has been upheld in numerous legal challenges. This manual, funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, contains guidelines for conducting field investigations and for developing restitution amounts to be paid by parties guilty of causing fish or freshwater mussel kills. The fish and mussel values were developed through detailed surveys of fish hatcheries and mussel production facilities.
Boating Risk Analysis INformation System (BRAINS), developed for the United States Coast Guard, is a web-based statistical system that helps assess the causes of boating accidents. The BRAINS system, publicly accessible at www.boatingrisk.com, allows you to determine the probability that an accident could occur given the conditions entered by a user. BRAINS is based on 500 regression models developed using the latest techniques in probability-based and censored regression analyses. The models were then built into a user-friendly software package designed for anyone to use. BRAINS allows the U.S. Coast Guard to quickly and easily determine which variables have the greatest influence on common boating accidents.
