This course focuses on the fundamental elements of great leadership with an emphasis on the whole person (both leader and follower). The Five Leadership Practices outlined in The Leadership Challenge serve as a basis for the course. Consistent application of these five practices directly relates to a leader's credibility, commitment, accountability, productivity and effectiveness. Therefore the course illustrates how each participant can assess their strengths and proactively improve their consistent application of these five practices. Beverly Obenchain MBA

Bev Obenchain is a consultant and educator whose background in organization strategy, planning, design and development, leadership, project management, operations, finance and performance measures provides a broad, cross-functional perspective of organizations. She brings more than twenty-five years of leadership and managerial experience in public and private settings to her current consulting and teaching activities as president of Obenchain & Associates, LLC.

As Vice President of Strategy for WildBlue Communications, Bev worked closely with the founder to obtain financing and technology for delivering high speed Internet access through satellite. While with EchoStar Communications Corporation, she obtained the first $330 million of investment for EchoStar s original entry into the DBS market. With Coors Ceramics Company, she held executive positions in Strategic Planning, Finance, Information Systems, Environment, Health and Safety and Government Contracting. Previous to that she held the position of Chief Administrative Officer and Assistant Treasurer of the University of Denver, where she managed the strategic planning, contracting, systems and finance functions for research and technology and sponsored programs.

Bev designed and implemented the University of Denver s, award-winning, graduate certificate program in Project-based Management in 1990. Bev s book, Profitable Projects - Money Angles for Project Managers is used in university courses and corporate training programs.

Bev earned her MBA in Operations Research and Information Systems and her bachelor's in Accountancy from the University of Denver. She currently serves on the University of Denver Leadership faculty where she teaches courses and designs curricula and programs in organization strategy and planning, project management, finance, leadership, e-commerce, communications, performance systems and change management.

Robert D. Melvin, Ph.D.

Robert Melvin is a professor at the University of Denver, the co-facilitator of the Executive Leadership Program at DU s Daniels Institute for Executive and Professional Development, and a mediator for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. His teaching and consulting work center on performance effectiveness issues emphasizing leadership, teamwork, persuasive presentations, conflict management, negotiations, and organizational development. Much of Melvin s work, particularly regarding successful persuasion techniques and negotiations, is focused on the development of skills that assist people in better identifying and meeting the needs, desires, and goals of clients and coworkers.

 

Melvin first became interested in performance effectiveness issues over twenty years ago when he began directing teams of special investigators for the U.S. Congress. His work on national and international policy issues resulted in the development of new methods of gathering and reporting information to Congress. Melvin has received numerous awards for his work which have resulted in many changes in public policy.

 

At the University of Denver, Melvin teaches a number of graduate courses including persuasive presentations, presentational speaking, conflict management, negotiations, and team building. Because the majority of his students are working professionals who want to apply what they have learned, his courses include many real world case studies and examples. He has received several awards for teaching excellence, including the Alpha Kappa Psi Distinguished Professor Award for 1995 and the Women s College Professor of the Year Award for 1996 and again for 1999.

Jodie Brown MA

Jodie Brown brings over 20 years experience in business consulting, recruiting and professional development training.  For nearly a decade, Jodie has specialized in the General Aviation industry recruiting senior executives and managers for her business aviation clients.

 

Her success with matching the right people to organizations stems from her broad experience. A former Associate Dean at the University of Denver and Director of Professional Development Programs at the University of Colorado, Jodie has designed and delivered training programs for Fortune 100 companies and universities for over 20 years. Her expertise includes: leadership and management development, organization communication, management information systems (MIS), communication flow analysis, corporate mediation, cognitive research (learning, personality and behavior; motivation; memory and recall), change management, customer service, and developing effective teams. Her diverse background lends a depth of knowledge to the student's learning experience and to her recruiting clientele. RJ Graham, Ph.D.

Dr. RJ Graham specializes in leadership development, executive coaching, teamwork, organizational communication, conflict management and optimizing human resource potential. With a work history in leadership for two Fortune 500 companies, and in applied psychology, she has a strong background to assist organizations with practical, effective strategies and techniques for business challenges. Her experience as an independent corporate facilitator extends over a decade with extensive experience working with telecommunications, banking services, and consulting services industries. RJ has provided program design, facilitation, and keynote addresses for over 40 organizations, including international corporations, small businesses, family-owned and operated firms, and not-for-profit foundations.

 

RJ s specialty is in customized programs and consulting services that highlight an organization s particular needs and opportunities. Through use of an integrated, individualized approach, her programs are constantly evolving to meet the requirements of each organization. RJ uses participants knowledge and backgrounds to enhance their own learning on an individualized basis. On consulting issues, she utilizes the experiences and viewpoints of the employees involved to provide the most comprehensive, customized assessment for optimizing changes and transitions.

 

RJ received a B.A. in Psychology from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska; an MBA from the University of Denver. Pam Grove, MBA

As a Consultant for KLA Group, Ms. Grove works with all organizations that touch the customer including: sales, customer service, operations, technical support and partners to build and enhance their professional skills to meet their goals. Her areas of expertise include sales consulting, curriculum development, training facilitation and all areas of marketing.

 

Ms. Grove assesses client needs and then manages KLA teams to develop training programs to deliver to worldwide sales teams either face to face, over the Internet or via self-study. Ms. Grove coaches and mentors KLA course participants to help them integrate the concepts they learned into day-to-day job activities.

 

Ms. Grove is responsible for all areas of marketing for KLA Group. She is skilled at marketing planning, public relations, qualitative and quantitative marketing research methodology, product development and product launches, copywriting and speech writing, website design and maintenance, and database development and usage for lead generation.

 

Before joining KLA Group, Ms. Grove owned her own marketing consulting business. She was the head of Marketing Research for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado (now Anthem). Previously, she was a marketer for two different banks (Bank One and Wells Fargo) and was a sales professional for an office automation company.

 

For 15 years, Ms. Grove has served as a distinguished member of the University of Phoenix faculty. She has taught courses in marketing, business research, project management, critical thinking, and business planning. She was the Marketing Chair for 6 years. Ms. Grove holds a M.B.A. with an emphasis in marketing from San Francisco State University, a teaching credential from San Francisco State University and a B.A. from the University of California at Davis.

 

Ms. Grove is an active leader with the American Marketing Association (AMA). As the head of the Professional Chapter s Council, she led a team of volunteers and paid staff and represented the needs and issues of 24,000 professional AMA members from 75 chapters to the International Board of Directors.

Barbara Brannen

Barbara Brannen is the founder of Playmore. She has a 25 year career in Human Resources, leaving this profession in 1999 to explore more fun in her life. Her journey has included working with individuals and business clients to put humor, play and fun back into their lives and organizations.

 

Barbara is the creator of such corporate events as the "Unfit Olympics," "The Apple of Your Eye," "Thank You for 'Beeing' There," " Unleashing Your Strength," and many more. Her programs have been instituted at organizations from large technology firms to hospitals and construction companies. Her clients enjoy her energy, creativity and always end up having more fun than before she came.

 

She is currently in the process of authoring a book on play for women. She is also working with individuals to help them discover more about what they like to do for play and how that can be integrated into their work and personal lives for more fun.

 

Meanwhile Barbara is also playing herself by conducting retreats on playful living.

 

Christopher Edwards, MSM

Christopher has a degree in engineering from Loughborough University, UK, and M.Sc. in Management from Regis University, CO. After graduating from Loughborough, he began his career as an R&D engineer, project manager and program director in telecommunications, consumer products, medical technology, and electronics industries in Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, and the United States.

He made the transition to business leadership by building on his project management experience to become a senior executive with international corporations including Pfizer, Searle, American Home Products (now Wyeth), The B.O.C. Group, and Teledyne. He has also launched and managed successful entrepreneurial ventures in the US and in foreign locations including Kelsar, a high-growth medical technology company operating in Mexico and San Diego.

He now consults and teaches leadership, technology management, and project management topics. Recent assignments include programs for Comprehensive Software Systems, Corporate Express, Finali, The Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce, Geneva Pharmaceuticals, Global Crossing, IBM, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, Oracle, ProSci Research, Swedish Medical Center, and Tactical Marketing Ventures.

 

He holds a USSF "B" national soccer coaching license, and is a co-founder and former Board Director and VP of a youth soccer club that now fields over 70 competitive teams in the north Denver metro area.


Christopher is an Adjunct Professor at University College, University of Denver (DU) in the Masters of Technology Management and Professional Studies programs, and Affiliate Professor at Regis University in the MS in Management program. He is an active member of the Working Group in Ethical Theory, which serves as a resource for the diverse disciplines of the University of Denver and greater community. He is also a member of the Academy of Management and is listed in Who s Who and People of Today.
